Villeins in the Kingdom of Valyria are a type of colonus, meaning a bondsman sworn in fealty as a commoner, and not requiring military service without a levy. Villeins are dwellers in villages run by a squire or higher ranking landlord. Unlike socagers, villeins do not pay cash rent for the right to live in their landlord’s estate, but instead provide farming, mining, or lumberjacking labor, called corvee. The landlord grants them a place to live, protection, and may let them keep a part of the produce which they harvest. Villeins are different from servants in that they are not a part of the squire’s household. Like socagers, however, villeins do fall under the soke of the landlord and must follow the custumal of the manor.
